Benefit car show for cancer patient Posted On: Friday, Mar. 18 2011 11:26 PM By Sonya Campbell Killeen Daily Herald
The "Battle for Brian" benefit car show today in Killeen is the latest effort by a group of people who are doing whatever they can to support a friend who has been diagnosed with terminal cancer.
One of the highlights at the show will be a truck they've been modifying for the man, who wants to leave it to his son.
Brian Fisher, 32, was diagnosed with stage 3 invasive ductal carcinoma, a male form of breast cancer, about a year ago and recently was told his condition is terminal.
"But that doesn't mean that's my outcome," he said Friday.
Describing how he learned he had cancer, Fisher said he mistook knots on his chest as the result of injuries from a motorcycle accident.
He had crushed his chest and was told by doctors he would have visual knots. But when he saw changes in his skin, he decided to seek help and underwent a biopsy. Forty-eight hours later, he learned he had cancer.
Treatment began with oral medications, which seemed to be doing a pretty good job, he said.
Then he relapsed "tenfold."
The cancer had spread to his lymph nodes and his treatment was changed to intravenous chemotherapy.
He will soon begin taking chemo treatments twice weekly.
"The outcome can possibly be a positive one. It's all about keeping me in remission," Fisher said.
For his son
In the event the worst happens, he wants to leave his young son, Preston, something to remember him by — his 1998 Chevy S-10.
Preston, who will be 2 in July, lives in California with Fisher's ex-wife. The father and son stay in touch via Skype and plans are under way for the pair to get together soon and often.
"He kind of looks like me, poor kid," Fisher said. "He's full of energy, always smiling, very smart. He can already take things apart and somewhat put them back together again. He'll definitely follow in my footsteps."
Fisher said he approached his friend Cody Bennett of Killeen about doing some advanced modifications to his truck and Bennett was glad to help.
"He's a really good guy. His outlook on things is amazing," Bennett said.
Describing work to the truck, he said, "We're doing a body drop. We've been working on it about three weeks," he said.
Bennett, Fisher and several of their friends work on the truck each evening and weekends.
"It's a big project," he said. "If we see he's getting tired, we make him rest."
Show of support
Fisher's friends also have shown their support by getting tattoos in his honor — much to Fisher's surprise.
He believed they were going out to dinner. Instead, they ended up at a tattoo shop.
Thirteen of his friends — some he had known for only three months — got tattoos of a cancer ribbon with Brian's name on it.
"I was just floored. At that point I did break into tears. Some of them had never gotten a tattoo in their whole life. It was just a beautiful thing, a beautiful moment," Fisher said.
He noted the last time he felt such a sense of camaraderie was when he served in the Marine Corps.
Fisher contends the car show and working on his truck with his friends have been good medicine.
"It kind of seriously just took my mind off this sickness thing. The support I've been having is what's been keeping me alive. All these people, this is my chemo. This is what I feel is going to make me well.
"If it weren't for these guys, I don't know what I would be doing right now. … I love them with all my heart. …These kind of people are a dying breed," Fisher said.
Bennett extended his own praise.
"This community is really coming together for somebody that they don't know. It's really impressive. I'm really proud of my city," he said.
About the car show
The "Battle for Brian" car show is set for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. today at McLeod Auto Sales, 1601 E. Rancier Ave. in Killeen.
Registration starts at 9 a.m. and awards will be presented at 3 p.m.
Between 60 and 100 vehicles of all types will be competing for the Top 10, which organizers said was basically the people's choice.
A best of show award, also known as Brian's Choice, will be given out by Fisher, who said his selection will be based on "genius moves" in originality and well-built qualities.
Because he believes less is more, he prefers vehicles that aren't too extreme.
He also plans to talk to owners to get a feel for how passionate they are about customizing their vehicles.
"I'm looking for true passion, that their heart is in it," Fisher said.
Winners will receive handmade awards.
In addition to the car show, food, drinks and desserts will be available.
i strongly think we do need to try and help out with his poroject even if we can only do allittle i thnk it will make a wonderful impression for the club and its a great cause and i think if we were in the same situation they would try and help as well!!!! thank you
